We tried to not schedule meetings that would result in lots of FPL because frankly, we didn't have the budget for it. Often we'd get the company to do the meetings with them on SA to save the union money. AMR/AAG is masterful at making unions waste money. Part of their reason for endless CBA grievances is to deplete union assets in my opinion. Most regionals had shared ALPA attorneys. Eagle had so many grievances, CBA violations and arbitrations that National gave us two full time attorneys. Absolutely unheard of in the FFD segment, yet it happened.

If you do your union job, and do it well, you don't make any friends in management, and you end up looking over your shoulder all the time.

That said, the few at National are ridiculously overpaid in my opinion; and several of them should be required to go back and fly the line for a year before returning to union work.

The flip side is you are not dealing with ethical, honest or trustworthy managers or executives. Anybody volunteering to union work in that environment should be thanked for their service in my opinion. If that includes an occasional good meal together, that's okay. I still say they should buy their own booze though.
By and large, booze is paid for by each individual when the group does go out. In terms of hotels, well they negotiate that outside of the company, its not API getting them, so of course they will be better.
All of this to say, that I still think we need non-company negotiators.
