They are rigid and for good reason. There is ample evidence to suggest that however well intentioned the prospective employee is, the enthusiasm for commuting wanes within six months and then tends to completely evaporate within 18 months.

Within the Planesense alumni are countless examples of pilots who just couldn't handle the commute despite how much they may have liked the job.

I will tell you that even living within a gateway city, 20 mins from the airport, the shortest commuting day I've had is 8 hours and often it is much longer. Add a four hour drive to that, 4 times a month... I'm not saying its not doable, but from the company's perspective they do not see an employee that will stick around for the long haul. When they are investing approximately 3 months and $20k+ on your training, they expect you to stick around for at least 18 months (hence the contract).
