I’ve been in flight decks now where the other guy expects me to act like his fraternity brother. That we are there to “have fun”. Well, I don’t agree with that. Just imagine some of these CVR’s playing on a 24 hr news loop. What would your families say?

Some of you younger guys will be captains soon enough. Then you’ll have to balance being friendly and hurting someones feelings because what they did was not SOP or professional. We can enjoy ourselves and keep the job safe. But I’m not there to be your friend.
If you're not on a lot of folks' No Fly, you will be soon....there is a right way and a wrong way to counsel an FO.

I don't think any FO worth their salt takes offense to being counseled and mentored. That's what a good captain is supposed to do. However, some captains simply do a terrible job of it. And some captains don't bother following SOP themselves, instead relying on their own slapstick version that they've made up over years of disregarding the books. Those are the truly dangerous types.

Saying that is more based on experiences at my last airline than at this one. In my year on property I have yet to fly with someone that I wanted to put on a No Fly list. The group overall is outstanding. There's always that small percentage.
