Not sure there’s anything special about a 550. The question is whether routes exist with enough premium demand to support a 76 seater configured at 50 seats. You could do that with a 175 just as easily.
Bedford at Republic said a 50 seat 170/175 won’t really work like a CRJ700 for the reasons Zondaracer posted. However, they are exploring converting the 170s (which currently fly for UA and DL) to 65 seats for AA. That’s seems to be workable so I guess we will have to wait and see what happens.
