Sadly, these days the bean counters have detailed records on how much any pilot volunteers for on average. Any time a labor issue comes up, withholding service (even when voluntary) has been ruled a labor action by the courts..... yes, that’s how messed up the laws are. The RLA is what it is and we’re stuck with it because the lawyers at ALPA don’t want to change it. Sadly, they’ve been working under it so long they know what to expect so it works for them... notice I said it works for the lawyers; not for the pilots.
We tried at a Board of Directors meeting to get the PAC charged with modernizing the RLA commensurate with modern business practices... and we were promptly subjected to no less than 3 hours of speeches from every national attorney they could muster to talk us out of trying to fix a broken law. They won.
It is what it is.
We did however get the PAC charged with defending the 1500 hour ATP rule. That was actually my motion to amend the agenda that put it on at the committee level, and later it passed the entire BOD as well.
