In an earlier life, I was a senior technical consultant for Nixdorf Computer Corporation, a German Based, mini & mid-sized computer manufacturer. Everything was going along fine, when they introduced a new type of computer. Management came to the technical staff asking for volunteers to learn this new system. Only one (out of 8 in my office) said "Yes". 6 months later, at exactly the same time, in every Nixdorf office across the country, a meeting was held, in which slightly more than 50% of us, nationally, were let go. Except of course those guys who had learned the new computer. The point being, you pay your money and you take your chances. There are no guarantees in this life. You have to live with your decisions, and without being able to predict the future, we all make lots of really dumb ones, especially when looked at in hindsight.
