I'de always rather wait for a gate than play games 'timing' it in the air. IMO it's better customer service, because everyone can use their cell phones and the lav while we wait.. plus it gives us the first opportunity to taxi to the gate or 'changed' gate if something becomes available. Plus then I can chill instead of watching our fuel and weather etc... Chilling is important to me, you can call it a core value
