A friend of mine had this exact scenario occur a few years ago. Was MD'd off the NYCM88 to the 73N, then awarded an AE for the 7ER before he went to training. The difference in conversion dates was two months, I think. The company was going to make him go to 73N training until he brought it to someone's attention that it didn't make sense(it wasn't automatic). He would only fly the 73N line for two weeks or so before going back to training.

They ended up cancelling his 73N training, putting him back on the non-existent NYCM88 line, and pay protecting him for the 73N. So basically he got two months off with pay, got a raise when he went to training, and then another one once he started flying the 7ER. The company got to use his training slot for someone who was actually going to fly the plane.
