He wasn't expelled from VMI, but definitely struggled academically. While in his plebe year at VMI, he was appointed to USMA. Math got him plebe year at West Point, and he was a turnback (i.e. put in the next class to repeat plebe year). The running cadet joke about Patton's statue facing the old Cadet Library was that it was placed that way so he could look at a place that he never bothered to enter.
