Sadly though, it is truly a global economy and 99% of the stuff you find can be had cheaper on Amazon or Ebay. I try to look for the hand made stuff to bring home.
You definitely have to haggle the crap out of the markets in HKG or China to get a good deal, but it can be done. Almost everyone in China WILL rip you off if you’re a westerner. There is a guy with a shop in Shanghai at the Science and Technology metro stop that caters to air crew... He’s not the cheapest, but he’s pretty good and has some cool stuff.
I’ve had good luck in Vietnam with buying shoes and clothes for a reasonable price, and some of the retail stores in Malaysia (KUL and PEN) are a good deal with no haggling.
