Iwatched a deicer spray 75 GALLONS onto a Beech 1900 tail about 13 years ago. I could've peed on it and gotten all the snow and ice off that was on it. At any rate, deicing fluid is WAY too expensive, just like jet fuel ($2.90 a gal in BOS when I flew in there a couple of weeks ago), but the airlines get hosed since we're a select community, need the product at a moments notice, and they'll tell us to go somewhere else if we don't like it.
Problem is management. They don't bill the customers correctly <g>. The cost of deice beats the daylights out of the cost of a crash. I'm not a gambler with ice on the wings and tail. Company wants to move the revenue, then it needs to price accordingly. Don't want to move it, cnx my flight. Easy. My job is to deliver myself safely, then the revenue is taken care. Besides, we all see how ridiculous companies are in wasting boatloads of cash. I could list dozens of examples.
