What I mean when I said “correctly” was just not jumping on the first opportunity to pick up open-time. Before you do that, just take a quick look at the weekly weather forecast or the reserve availability. Good example was this past January. Had a 2-day trip on my schedule....saw that the Northeast might be getting some snow. So I UTO’d that 2-day and a couple days later I get called for a VDA for that same exact 2-day. Patience is a virtue sometimes. I also try and PTO a couple trips and try and do broken pairings with deadheads instead over the same footprint. It’s not easy all the time I’ll admit and takes some work but it’s still less work than blocking 90 hours/month which I’ve never done. Hope that provides some clarity on what I meant.
