That is the only fair solution. If you don’t find it very fair, it’s because you’re not getting to the gate fast enough. Tough ****. YX and OO make up 65% of the UAX lift. Add in Mesa and it’s even more.
The airplane says United on the side. Unless it is your own metal, as of the 15th a United pilot has priority in seniority order (providing the agreement was signed). I really don’t see that changing. Deal with it as you see fit, but accept responsibility if there are consequences resulting from a poor decision. Free will and all.
