35 year old airframe the airlines told Airbus they did not want back in the mid 2000’s resulting in Airbus building the A350. When the 787 racked up impressive sales they resurrected the concept hoping newer engines would help.
As an aside all widebodies are selling poorly right now. Probably a good time to be shopping!
