We do hot (airport) reserve. Short call is also a thing here, but only when coverage is adequate. Scheduling typically wants 3 and sometimes 4 full crews at the ready in EWR, for example. If you have high enough seniority and they already have the required crews at the ready, you can typically do short call from home or a crash pad.
Airport is good for some people because it's an 8 hour shift on a fixed schedule (meaning it's commutable) and you get per diem. On short call you're on duty for 12 hours, no per diem but you can stay at home in your PJs if that's your thing provided you can get to the gate within the 2 hour callout window.
