Obtaining a pay raise past the amendable date does not guarantee full retroactive pay. The longer negotiations drone on, the more likely a signing bonus will be proffered. It will be a fraction of the raise you would have earned if a contract was signed on the amendable date.

If you factor in other contractual gains, the losses over time can become quite sizeable.
