Yes, VBD pilots are basically permanent TDY pilots and are treated as such. You get 24/7 per diem and a hotel. Some domiciles are given rental cars for every pilot, some have shared rental cars, and some have no rental cars. If you choose not to use the hotel, you can elect to get paid half of the amount the company would have spent on the hotel instead.
I know you didn’t ask, but VBD pilots bid per their seniority, just as if they were actually based in the domicile they end up in each month. Some senior VBD pilots can bounce around bases and end up bidding very senior and get great schedules. It’s great for them, but very frustrating for the folks who have permanently bid into a base with constant VBD’s. They would be senior if not for the VBD guys coming in and bumping them down.
