But that doesn't account for the economic and personal cost of the lost time and the required travel infrastructure. Or going around mountains, or over water.
Actually, flying isn't inefficient by any stretch. The infamous 737 Maxes are getting 116 MPG per seat, and even the most inefficient modern aircraft get better MPGs than a Prius.
