Your original post was a bit misleading. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you weren't intentionally so. You stated "they were rerouted because they were GOING INTO (emphasis added) on call days." What you should have said was "they were extended because they had additional on call days remaining in the block of days, beyond the footprint of the original trip assignment, which was also awarded during on call days."
Now that we know "the rest of the story" I really don't see a problem. The pilot in question was assigned a trip over on call days and was extended into further on call days beyond the original trip assignment. Happens all the time, and is not unusual at all. That's part of the reserve gig. Anyone on reserve given a trip assignment needs to at least consider that he or she could be extended, if there were more on call days remaining.
The fact that this guy flew a GS is irrelevant to this discussion....other than the fact he may have opened himself up MORE to the company by volunteering for the GS in the first place. After all, absent that he couldn't have been assigned the original trip at all. (However he did get premium pay for the first duty period, as described, and in any case it was his decision to make).
