The latter is true, the seat was yours.

We don’t move for revenue passengers because that could screw over a commuter.

You moved to help a non rev who doesn’t have jumpseat access, and as long as that doesn’t displace a jumpseater that is entirely your choice.

In your case the move you made was a gentlemanly action, but I think his poorly made point was the gate agent and her family should be grateful not pushy, and the captains involvement should have been limited to approving a jumpseat and verifying no other commuter needed it, not pressuring you.
