It’s called being polite, the guy may or may not have believed what he was saying. When someone tells a story like yours to a stranger or even casual acquaintance, the listener is always going to say “you made the right choice” it’s polite and makes you feel better...

I’ve talked about a similar situation myself with Captains I fly with in conversation. They 100% of the time say “you made the right choice” but in reality, who knows...
