If you do your 20, you won't get a pension check until it is paid off if you didn't manage to pay it back while you were on active duty.

Yeah trying to get on some ADSW orders - not holding my breath but we'll see what happens. From what I've heard, you can be on ADSW orders as long as they're no longer than 180 days at a time and not have to pay the VSP back up front. However like you said, once you start collecting retirement, they'll take a portion of that until you're paid up.
