This is something that could happen to any of us. Seems like both are at fault here, I forsee ground control will be reviewing their SOP. My personal TEM technique is to call as soon as I get off 22L while on a straight line but only after we have read back the taxi instructions and I'm sure we share the same mental model of where we are and where we need to go. I don't call when nearing turns, and definitely not while nearing a hold short line. I circumvent OPS and contact ramp, ACARS or in range call took care of ops.
Someone else said it before, when in doubt ask! Nothing wrong with double checking a crossing clearance or take off clearance. When I was a skipper I also used to say, when in doubt STOP!
Now, did they run the QRH?
