United almost always asks, Northwest does in MSP but not ORD. A United agent once told me they use it to verify identity because some ID pictures and/or passport pictures can be pretty out-of-date and it just gives them an extra level of security.

Company makes me carry it anyway so my passport just lives in my coat pocket. Never hurts and I haven't lost it yet.
