I think its done through reroutes so the reserve flies the majority of the interrupted trip and the line holder gets what scheduling wants even though they are supposed to make an effort to return you to your original trip. There's often a need to cover flying that results in a reroute for no obvious reason other than your trip through ATL has the correct timing.
