I'd suggest you get your private before deciding on a career change. Then, I'd suggest looking outside the box for financing options. See if a family member will give you a loan, home equity loan, 401k loan, etc. The interest rate for flight training is about 10%, not a good rate. If you find a flying club to do your training at you could get all of your ratings for under $40k. Find someone willing to split the cost and time build with you, and you could be under $30k. You'll have to look for the places with reasonable costs, they don't take out full page ads in Flying magazine. ATPs is expensive and has a long history of inadequate instruction. If you can teach yourself and learn quickly, you'd do fine there. If you need extra help you'll likely be sent on check rides unprepared.
