United makes that decision, not XJT. Right now the launch customer is GoJet. The 550 is an experiment and a band aid. United is using the 550 as a tool to get around scope clause limits in the mainline pilot contact. They would prefer to be flying 3 class 175’s but the UAX fleet is already maxed out on those. For now United is trying to see if premium class customer in the north east will accept that product on a regional jet.

The 145 is also a very profitable airframe for United and run 90% full most of the time. Right now XJT has about 65 of them on the line and UA has said they want to 30 more in service for westward expansion.

A few months ago Boeing directed Embraer to develop a new 50 seat RJ. When that comes out it will probably replace the 145.
