I definitely have to think about that as others mentioned that now is the time to do it. I’m gonna start with the demo flight and then lessons to see where I’m at in the next 2-3 years and see if it’s worth it to leave sooner than later.
My main concern is the pension since I don’t know how it works with airlines, as opposed to my present job in which I know I’ll get 50% of my last year plus my 401k, 457, plus other benefits. However, I’ll keep doing research to make an educated decision and the one that works best for me.
FDX and UPS still have pensions of some sort. The PAX airlines have pretty much eliminated them. The better majors typically have generous 401k employer contributions (15%+). You can optionally contribute as well.
So there's definitely some risk pursuing the money in your case. If it all works out and you get on with a decent major quickly, you'd likely be significantly better off financially in the long run. But no guarantees.
