I see that as a good thing. As much disdain as most of us feel towards our Express operation, having less carriers is better. United Express is a necessity and 50 seat jets still have a place. The ERJ-145 is by far the better of the two 50 seat products and a refurbishment of these aircraft is a good thing for our passengers. We need a total of three large, healthy Express carriers to feed our hubs and, through Aviate, develop a large percentage of our new pilots here at United going forward. Less regional carriers is better in the long run for the regional pilot profession (those who end up making a career at the regional level for various reasons). Just my .02
I think you are absolutely correct, having each regional try to cut each others’ throats to keep contracts is precisely why the fifty seat jet fleet is in such disgusting disrepair.
