Agree. If they promised something, you can’t remove that offer 3 days prior to the start date and expect to be viewed as professionals. If they need to furlough them a week later, so be it. But at least stand behind what you have offered as a professional organization. If the offer was a month out, that would be a different story. I hope united will change their decision on this.
Might be a slippery slope. Big distinction between cancelling class/ stop hiring vs furloughs. It breaks a psychological barrier. If they're going to break that barrier and furlough, they may do the math and see if it makes sense to furlough a couple hundred.
Plus, 3 days is no notice, but some of those people may be able to get their jobs back vs
a week into class and they've filled your position or it's simply been too long.
