I talked to an actual human from network planning over the summer and they said red eyes are a minimum two year project due to technology, operations, and planning concerns. She said they are a thing in the puzzle palace and will eventually happen but she doesn't know when they will be a thing in the real world.
I personally have done enough flying on that side of the clock to never want to do it again, but I welcome it as an option for our little operation. Increased organic aircraft utilization and block hours are a good thing no matter how you slice it.
It's kind of embarrassing that technology is their reason and it'll take 2 years!!!?! Feels like our own Y2K bug. What kind of Apollo era supercomputer are they using?!
