They usually know their science. But they don't necessarily get the big picture (usually don't)... tend to take a very stovepipe view when their 15 minutes arrives.

Climate scientists would have us shut down airlines, all heavy industry, and ride bikes everywhere to save the "planet".

Politicians, with all of their warts, at least represent the interests of actual people. Scary as it may sound, they are often the adults in the room.
