I always fire up the APU the soonest of:
1) Passengers begin boarding or
2) FAs ask for water pressure (I'm on fifi)
I never cared about tripping over dollars to save pennies.
For all those that waited until the last minute to start the APU, thank you for the extra 12 cents in my last profit sharing check. Before taxes. It'll be the last profit sharing check I see for a few years. So stop doing that crap and make the passengers comfortable. Oil prices are below $20/barrel.
