You can argue details that might amount to a 1 or 2% error, but I don't think that changes the overall picture all that much. I've heard the argument primarily go to undercounting.
This article points out that overall death rates have been much higher than pre-COVID19, likely a result of undereporting COVID19 deaths. It's in-line with what most media outlets are reporting:

The only news outlet I've heard the overcounting theory come from is Fox, and it was from 2 weeks ago. Basically, a family physician disagreed with the CDC's methodology for diagnosing COVID19 deaths in the absence of tests:
