No, there isn't much difference as far as 2 legs on one legacy vs the other. So if one lives in a United hub, they'll likely stick with United since that's likely their go-to frequent flyer program.
I was looking for an EWR-LAS nonstop recently. There used to be a couple a day on United; also some on other airlines. Now, there is no EWR-LAS nonstop on any airline.
