I did exactly what he described this month reduced vac footprint to 0 and AVAed when I wanted to.
Not true for VTO - you can shrink the vacation footprint to zero days in the SLG process and every day of the month is available to pick up a trip on.
Your last statement is true for a regular or reserve line.
You can ask to reduce the vacation # of days also but it is company choice to honor the request. Sounds like OP doesn't want that anyway.
