Unlike pilots, he doesn't pretend to be an expert in everything, especially when running the government is concerned. His job is, at least in this sense, is to advise the President about public health. He has advisors in the room who should also be countering with what measures will do with respect to the economy, the health care system, national security, infrastructure, etc. Fauci is not a God-King.
Oh, and since we are now suddenly experts that a shutdown is killing everyone, several studies published in the 2000s have attributed a decreased general mortality rate with an increase in unemployment and other recession markers. People decrease poor health behaviors like heavy smoking, drinking and eating out and increase behaviors like exercise, eating better portioned and healthier meals and reduced drinking/smoking.
