Was just finishing training and my instructor brought up the fact that the airbus and 777 logic as far as the autothrottles go are similar. He stated that IF the crew was doing the approach in VS mode instead of APP and simply had a vertical speed dialed in and never actually captured the G/S, coupled with the autothrottles being still armed, that they could have simply not noticed the engines not spooling up in time to manually override them until it was too late. Just speculation which we all know is bad. Merely throwing it out for discussion. I fly the guppy so I don't know jack about the 777 or airbus.
