I’m not making the case for or against UBI. I do think it’s an interesting idea and I think moving forward we are going to have to come up with a solution to automation and its potentially devastating impact on the economy. I have no idea if it will actually work or not but I think it’s worth looking into. My point was simply that we need to get past the point of immediately rejecting ideas that we associate with the other side if we ever want to come up with effective solutions.
So the fear is automation. That's got to be the dumbest excuse for UBI.
We've always had productivity improvements.
At one time, fields were plowed with oxen. Automation got rid of many farm jobs.
Assembly lines have gotten rid of many manual labor jobs.
I'd put out a list of productivity improvements over the years, but automation is nothing new. Only a rube would buy that as an excuse for UBI.
Finally, before the 'rona arrived, unemployment was the lowest in decades. Now, how exactly is automation hurting employment?
