That all changed and the govt started paying the payroll, so they figured they should rip it all off like a band-aid now and set this air line up to be an all airbus fleet.
Over kill on the UNA, then bring people back as needed. The company gets the added benefit of trying to leverage concessions from the pilots in the mean time.
you are correct. Not sure about the airbus point tho- there are a lot of relatively young Boeings in the fleet.
