At the macro level, the “looking down from 90,000 foot view”... is the US Aviation Industry truly “deregulated”. The Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 brought down artificial barriers to competition and entrance to the market. Anyone with enough money to burn could start an airline.
But today we still have the Railway Labor Act, FAR’s and riding herd on it all is the FAA who’s stated purpose is to promote aviation safety AND commerce (which sometimes conflict with each other).

We certainly are the most regulated deregulated industry I can think of.
As far as the RLA goes, I would rather work at a unionized airline than non-Union. I have worked at both.
