I wouldn't say never, but hacking, malicious/unauthorized access are serious roadblocks, among others.
There's a tradeoff... I can't envision a truly autonomous airliner, they cannot even conceive how to make a machine which can think and exercise judgement like a human. Therefore you need a ground control link as a backup, and that's an obvious vulnerability.
