Also, every one of these pilots started their career with the idea that they would retire at age 60 with a pension that would have been less than what they would have got per year to 65 from this deal. 😕
It’s the same mindset as the people who leave with 1,000 hours in their sick bank. I would ask them why they would fly the last year for free instead of burning their bank. There were 2 pretty consistent responses.
1. “What else would I do?“
2. “If I call in sick I’d be capped at 93 hours.” When I would point out that they just flew 14 days for an additional 20 hours over their published line, they’d say, “Yeah, but I made 105 hours of pay instead of 85.” I’m still trying to wrap my head around that mindset. If I lived in base I’d rather get 73 hours to bid reserve than to fly 12 days of LHR trips for 78 hours.
