"Modern era" (defined?). Congress decided that every should have equal access to mail service. Hence a mailbox at, or close to, every residence in America. You do not have a FDX or UPS drop box at every residence

United Airlines (and others) is flying some cargo flights, and helping keep pilots in the air, with US Mail being part of the cargo. They don't fly UPS or FDX boxes.
