ALPA, on a national level, might push agenda towards DC that benefits legacies more. But as a Union, your MEC is doing whatever they can to protect YOUR pilots. There is no conflict of interest there.
Oh, there's definitely a conflict. National is focused on protecting the integrity of "good" pilot jobs, not crappy "pay your dues" regional jobs (which is exactly how they are perceived). Were you not around for the Lee Moak letter where they said the regional industry must just suck it up and pay your dues?
The less they pay you, the more they can demand from the legacy employer.
