Just a little opining on this.......

It is very rare for a Rep Candidate to just crawl out of the woodwork and run for a position. I would venture to say that most, if not all, of our reps keep their eyes open for people interested in running in the future. They encourage them to get involved in some way and get a feel for what the jobs within the union are like, hoping that they will gain interest and want to run for their seat in the future.

Most reps don't care about cloning themselves through a replacement. They are looking for hard working, level-headed, and dedicated people. Having said that, some will try and find someone that has a similiar agenda, so that they can feel like their voice will carry on thru their replacement.

Long story long...... The statement made by your rep may not be any underhanded, insider trading, or incestuous conspiracy. He may just be keeping his eyes open for someone willing to put in the hard work, so that he can encourage them and take a break...

It's not that different from you or I looking for someone to replace him.
