Often the schools with the highest spending have the lowest success rates (reference Baltimore). Charter schools are most times cheaper than the public schools with which they compete but have far better outcomes.
Fair enough, understood. I agree there is plenty of room to discuss, debate, and (something else relevant that starts with the letter ‘d’). Charter schools, Magnet Schools, even private schools with scholarships for instance, and proper funding of public school. And I agree public school is not always going to be the best option, but sometimes it is. I went to a very good public system but we were augmented by a University. We were actually on campus. Weird, right? My mother attended a very good private school on scholarship. Sometimes I regret not going to that excellent private school, but that’s the adult me talking, and I am very happy where I am now.
Baltimore is bad example regarding public school funding and effects. The city itself has so much going against it. There is no viable industry. At least not one that a city can capitalize on. It’s harbor is great, but too far up the Chesapeake to be viable for trade when compared to others, but there is some. Shipbuilding is gone. It is a city that has too many people and not enough poor paying jobs, let alone well paying ones. You. could throw all the money at Baltimore schools and it might not be enough. The city straits are that dire. I hope they can figure something out because it has some infrastructure. It’s like Boston with better weather — tasty food, baseball, history, and a little dangerous. And Boston has the Education, Science, Medical, and Finance Industries paying the bills.
I will admit that think education is important for our success, health, and growth as a nation. You can still be a plumber, or welder, airline pilot, or tradesman; but you should be a well read, and civically engaged tradesman.
