Period. If I'm wrong, prove it. QI only protects you from using deadly force in the lawful commission of your duties to prevent loss of your life, the life of another officer or the life of a civilian. I'm not claiming that an oversight board resolves those issues but I AM claiming that it increases transparency in the process and gives the community a greater say in what happens with bad cops and by extension greater ability to track patterns of wrongdoing. The law is an imperfect thing and so are the policies that govern those who enforce it. Is there room for improvement on both fronts? Absolutely. And we should take this time to do exactly that but to claim that police unions protect murderers or that the greater body of law enforcement in America is made up of murders is simply wrong in every way it can be wrong. The taking of human life is ugly and a hideous thing for everyone involved and it should never be done lightly or not thoroughly investigated in the aftermath and bad actors held accountable if discovered. But it does happen with reason on rare occasion. When it does we need to be less hyperbolic about the why and more introspective of the reasons behind the action, working to mitigate those reasons in the aftermath.
we will just have to disagree. Most don’t understand the legal difference between murder and other wrongful death charges so I wasn’t parsing words to be explicit or accurate in that vain. I was not in a union as a LEO. We had lots of transparency and accountability at our department. Just because you and I did not personally see the things I referred to doesn’t mean they don’t happen. If you were actually paying attention you would be aware just as I am.
