After 9/11, airlines furloughed thousands. There was no thought of a quick recovery, and they were right for the most part. By the time I got furloughed in May of 2002, our planes were pretty full but only because of the fare sales. Yields were down and we were losing money despite the decent load factor.
Why do you think our different management teams (I’m at DL) are all trying to keep pilots on board and come up with solutions to save money while maintaining staffing levels? I was only a major airline pilot during the 2001-2003 furloughs, but I don’t remember another downturn when management tried to save jobs. I will say I know with absolute certainty that they’re not trying to save jobs to help our junior brothers and sisters support their families. My only conclusion thus far, is that they all think we will recover much faster from this, than we did from a terrorist attack or a slump in the economy, and don’t want to bump and flush, just to re-train in 6-12 months.
What do you see happening going forward? I’m honestly curious what I’m missing, or where my thoughts are going off the rails.
