I think DeSantis going on a rant about how the virus wasn't a big deal, calling out scientists and journalists and then two weeks later having an explosion of cases was probably not a smart move. I also think, reopening and telling local authorities they CANNOT impose stricter mandates was a mistake.
As for Georgia, Kemp entered lockdown later than Colorado, and opened earlier with less restrictions. We had almost exactly the same number of cases at the time. Now Georgia has 4.5 times as many cases. Georgia has 3.5 times as many deaths, and 1.9 times as many deaths/1M population. I'll also add that Kemp saying he only just found out COVID was communicable by asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic carriers about 3 months into the pandemic was a bit ridiculous. CDC is headquartered in his state.
It seems like our economy is doing as well as can be expected. I'm not sure what metrics you're using to declare economies booming in FL and GA so I can't argue one way or the other. Georgia had 43,000 new unemployment filings the week ending 03 Oct, Colorado had 5,800 according to the DOL report this morning. Georgia has less than twice the population of Colorado.
Floridians are happy and smiling though. In my State people are depressed and going broke 100% due to gov't mandates. I know where I'd rather be.
